Horse Drawn Ambulance
Over the years there have been many changes in funeral customs. In early days, most people were embalmed at home, so funeral homes did not have today’s version of preparation rooms or embalming tables. The funeral directors would take their instruments in a large bag, similar to medical doctors’ bag, and what was then known as a cooling table with him to the home where he would embalm and dress the deceased. Also, most funeral services were held in the parlor of families personal homes, so the funeral homes did not have the need for chapels.

Charles K. Wetherby
Our story begins when the Boulton-Pillsbury Funeral Home, located on the corner of Mill and Francis Street, was purchased in 1895 by George Fifield and Charles Wetherby forming the Fifield-Wetherby Funeral Home. This location was soon moved to Michigan Ave and was located where the old Hayes Hotel was built.

Wetherby’s Circa 1940’s
During the 1920’s, the funeral home moved to its current location, 402 Wildwood and became solely owned by Charles K. Wetherby and hence became “The Charles K. Wetherby Home.” This new location offered visitors the feel of a private home with the conveniences of a modern facility. In addition, they also offered ambulance services. In 1941, Mr. Wetherby passed away and the funeral home was purchased by two employees, Chester Easton and Donald B. Pelham. The gentlemen continued as partners of the home until the mid 1950’s when another Pelham came into the business.

Donald B. Pelham
Donald’s son, Dean, joined the establishment in the 1950’s as Secretary/Treasurer and became President in the 1970’s when Donald retired. Shortly before the passing of Donald Pelham in 1988, grandson Cris entered the family business. In 1990, Cris Pelham became the President, Dean took over as Chairman of the Board and Chester Easton retired. Today, Cris continues to carry on the Pelham family commitment to the Wetherby Funeral Home.

Wildwood Ave. Location
Present Day.
Since 1895, Wetherby’s has stood as a respected community institution. To the families served, it is a connection with the earlier days of Jackson, and the able people who have preceded us. The strength, character, and years of faithful service are as much a part of its heritage as the walls themselves. While the funeral home has grown and changed over the years, the main focus is still as it always has been; to offer compassionate and professional funeral services to the families we serve. It is a goal that inspires us each day, now, and into the future.

Courtesy, Kindness and Consideration. These three words sum up what is most appreciated in time of sorrow. Because of genuine sincerity of spirit, friendliness and thoughtfulness, the services held by the Wetherby Funeral Home have become lasting memories in the minds and hearts of Jackson families.
